Hello families!
We had another great week in first grade! It was our first full week using our academic curriculums. Here's an overview of the things we practiced:
Math: It was popsicle week! We used popsicle sticks to practice tally marks, made a class pictograph and tally chart about our favorite popsicle flavors, and counted by 2s using twin pops! We wrapped up the week by having a popsicle party where each child got to eat their own twin pop! We also spent a little time re-learning math apps on our iPads (Dreambox, 100 Yay, Moose Math).
Literacy: We read the stories This is the Way We Go to School and How Will I Get to School This Year? and we created a class book with silly different ways to get to school. You will get your own copy of the class book next week!
-phonics focus: short a
-sight words: the, and, to, that, can
Writing: We wrote our first story "What I Like." Check out your child's Seesaw post from this week to see and hear their story!
Social Studies: We will be working on building our classroom community over the next few weeks. To end our week, we made a special craft called "The ABCs of First Grade."
FAST Testing:
Our first graders will take two assessments within the FAST Assessment System. These assessments are called aMath and aReading. Both of these assessments are computerized tests that take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete and each of them uniquely adapt to your child’s level of learning based on their performance.
We took the aReading test earlier in the week and will take the aMath assessment on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 10:15am.
Results from these assessments will be shared with families during fall conferences.
If you have any questions related to these assessments, feel free to visit https://www.fastbridge.org/reading/areading/ for information related to aReading, or https://www.fastbridge.org/product-math/amath/ for aMath.
Parent Volunteer Opportunity:
I am looking for someone to help stuff our Friday Folders each week. If this sounds like something you would be interested in doing, please let me know!
Dodge Field Trip:
We have our first field trip next week! We will go to Dodge Nature Center on Friday, Sept. 23 from 11:45-1:30 to learn about Hens & Roosters. If you would like to join us as a chaperone, please let me know. We'll see how much room we have on the bus for parent chaperones or else we may have you meet us at Dodge!
Important Papers:
If you still have your emergency information forms or field trip permission slip from meet and greet, please sign them and return so we can have them on file. If you have a field trip slip in your child's Friday folder, please return it asap so they are able to join us on our field trip on Friday.
Picture Day:
Picture day is Tuesday, Sept. 27. We will go as a class during our assigned time- likely in the morning.
Lunchroom Reminder:
Breakfast costs $1.75 this school year, lunch is $3.20, and a carton of milk is $0.60. This is different from last year when these items were free. Please make sure to have a conversation with your first grader if you prefer them not to order these things at school.
