BATS, Butterflies, and other FUN Stuff!

Good evening!

I hope you are staying dry and warm on this gloomy Tuesday. Despite the change in weather, we've been having a great week at Somerset. Take a look!

We're BATTY about 2nd Grade!

One of my favorite times during the school year is quickly approaching: Halloween! To get ourselves excited, we turned on some spooky tunes and did an adorable "craftivity" on BATS! We shared everything that we know about bats, did a little research (via "PebbleGo"), and then went to create our own little flying friends. They turned out great!

Now...I LOVE crafts, but I love them even MORE if I can tie them into the new Common Core standards! We have been learning all about finding the main idea and supporting details in non-fiction texts, so we put our knowledge to the test as we closely read a passage all about bats:

Students read the passage several times, looking for the main idea not only of the whole passage, but also the main idea within each individual paragraph. We highlighted each main idea and underlined the details that support that main idea.

Students then chose one paragraph to summarize on a main idea graphic organizer. We've definitely got some star researchers on our hands! :-)

BUTTERFLIES!

Our butterflies finally emerged! We spent several days observing the changes that have occurred. We also learned the anatomy of butterflies and how their diets change as they undergo metamorphosis!

We also reviewed the life cycle of a butterfly and made our own butterflies, complete with transparent wings (aka wax paper) and colored scales (aka tissue)!

After days of enjoying our butterflies in the classroom, we knew that it was time to let them free. They need time to find a place to reproduce so that the cycle can begin again! We chose to let them out at Somerset's butterfly garden on a nice, sunny day:

Other fun stuff!

That's all for now!

Take care,
Mrs. B :-)
