Weekly Update: April 23

Peek at the Week:

Want to hear about our week? Ask your child the following questions:

MATH:
  • What is the name and value of each of these coins?
  • How much money is shown?

READING:

  • What animal life cycle did you study this week? What did you learn about box turtles?
  • Can you read this poem (and show me the actions)?

  • Can you read these OU/OW words? (Diphthongs)

  • What do you remember about these vocabulary words?

SOCIAL STUDIES:
  • What are some things you like about your community?

  • How have communities changed from long ago to today?

WRITING: We began a non-fiction unit, where our first topic was writing facts about ourselves. We played a guessing game about our classmates based on the facts we wrote. Ask: What facts did you write as clues about yourself?

Things to Know:

NUMBER SCROLLS: Thank you so much for helping us gather the materials to start our number scroll project! We have two new members in the 1,000 Club: Liam S and Claire! Way to go!

Autism Acceptance Month:
April is Autism Acceptance Month. This is a month that is very dear to us because we have many friends within our grade level who we see throughout the day from Somerset's autism program classrooms. We love to learn from each other and have grown our skills in empathy and understanding so much this year. Each morning, Mrs. Huettl has been highlighting a friend from our autism classrooms- check out the announcements on Seesaw to learn more! We are excited every day when we play the announcements to see who we will learn about next. On Monday, April 24th we will have a guest reader, Aja Jones, who will share a short story about making friends with a child on the autism spectrum. She will explain how autism can look very different and will leave space for us to ask questions and learn more.

Green Take Home Folders
Please help your first grader to remember their green folders every week. Typically they hand them in on Mondays, but any day of the week is okay as long as they are returned by Friday morning. We have had many forgotten folders over the past few weeks. Please help with those reminders, thank you!

FAST Testing:
Our final FAST tests (aReading and aMath) will be on the mornings of Tuesday, May 16th and Thursday, May 18th. I am eager to see all of the growth this hardworking group of first graders has made this year!
