Weekly Update: Week of 4/30

Things to Know:

END OF THE YEAR PLAY: In your child's Friday Folder, you'll find an invitation to our class play celebration. Stapled to the invite are the scripts for the two plays we will be doing together. We will choose parts TOMORROW (Monday, April 30). Feel free to look through the plays with your child to see what parts he/she may like to choose!

MYSTERY READERS: Thank you to all who have volunteered! We were all booked up, however I thought it would be fun to wrap up the year with some additional mystery reader slots! If you haven't had a chance yet, there are now some slots for Mondays leading up to the end of the school year. Please visit this link if you are interested!

YOUR VOTE COUNTS! Have you heard? There will be a special election on May 8!
District 197 is holding a special election and I hope you will vote on or before May 8. If it passes, the students at Somerset will benefit in the following ways:
  • Building maintenance updates
  • A new gym, separated from the cafeteria
  • Updated classrooms & new learning spaces
  • Handicapped accessibility improvements
  • And more
Maintenance updates and facility renovations are being proposed for all of the district’s elementary and middle schools and the high school. Since your child is just in elementary school, they could also  benefit from upgrades made at Heritage or Friendly Hills Middle School and Henry Sibley High School.
More information can be found at www.isd197.org/bond or by calling 651-403-7557. Combined polling locations on May 8 will be at Friendly Hills, Heritage, Henry Sibley, Pilot Knob and St. Stephen’s Church (West St Paul). They will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Find your polling location at pollfinder.sos.state.mn.us or call the District Office at 651-403-7002.

YOUR VOTE COUNTS! In December, the District 197 School Board voted unanimously to place a funding question before voters on May 8, 2018. The decision was based on 18 months of study by the district that included a Facilities Task Force, community input and expert assessments of building and mechanical maintenance needs.

There will be one ballot question on May 8, a request for the approval to issue $117 million in building bonds for additions, renovations and repairs at all schools, K-12. The bond proceeds will be used to:
          - Conduct building and mechanical maintenance
          - Modernize outdated classrooms and educational spaces
          - Improve fine arts and athletics spaces
          - Address handicapped accessibility and school parking lot safety

If voters approve the ballot question, the tax impact to a resident with a home value of $237,000 (median district home value) would be approximately $7 per month.
