MONDAYS WITH MS. VICTORIA: On Monday afternoons, students in our class will have the privilege of learning with our Headway professional, Ms. Victoria! Somerset is so fortunate to have Ms. Victoria to be a friendly, helpful hand around school. She will be joining our class for 20 minutes each week to talk with students about our feelings and learn about emotional regulation, calming skills, and appropriate ways to handle tough situations. Today, we talked about frustration, shared our own "first clues" that we're getting frustrated, and practiced deep breathing as a coping skill!

Things to Know:

FALL HARVEST FUN: You're invited! Let me know if you'd like to help with a station. :-) The more, the merrier! (Please note: We will be having a costume-free party. As much as I'd love to bust out my banana costume for the day, we have decided as a school to keep costumes as a fun, at-home tradition. Thank you for your understanding! We will still have an amazing time!)

MYSTERY READER: Thank you for your interest in becoming a mystery reader! I've received a lot of emails about how to sign up. Please click the link to the LEFT of this blog (underneath the Scholastic Book Club banner) to set up a time to read! Mystery reader takes place on FRIDAYS from 1-1:15 p.m. Thanks so much!

*NOTE: To access the links, please view the blog in "web version" if you are accessing from a smartphone.

SHOW AND TELL: As a way to help continue to build on our classroom community, your child is welcome to bring a show and tell item on his or her "circle leader/number corner helper" day. Your child will be given a little yellow slip (pictured below) on the day before his/her share day. Please know that we will make every effort to keep your child's show and share item safe and secure, however I strongly discourage bringing anything that is of extreme value. (Also, please be mindful of size- the object should be able to be safely stored in your child's locker during the day. Thanks!)

SPELLING WORDS: Your child received a list of spelling words in Friday Folders today. If all else fails, here are the words of the week! (Sight words are considered extra credit. Two of the sight words pictured below will be featured on the test for bonus points!)

WINTER WEATHER IS COMING! It's that time of year...

STAY HEALTHY! It's that time of year...Colds and sniffles are all around and hand-washing is more important than ever! Please take time to review some little tricks of the trade for keeping healthy:

LIBRARY BOOKS UPDATE: Developing lifelong readers is a delicate balancing act. It is important that kids are able to explore the words and pictures that interest them (regardless of text difficulty) as well as just right books that they can successfully read alone. Now that we've had a couple of check-outs under our belts, students are now able to check out ONE "Just Right" book and ONE "anything" book for a total of TWO library books. When you see your child's books this weekend, ask them about their choices and encourage them to read them with you. If the "just right" book does not seem to be a good fit, discuss with your child about what they can do next time to find a better choice. Thanks for all you do to foster your child's love of reading!
