Weekly Update: April 12-16

What's Happening in First Grade?

Ask your child the following questions to review what we learned last week!

Writing:
  • What does it mean to PROOFREAD a piece of writing?
Reading
  • What happens when TWO VOWELS go "walking together" in a word?

Vocabulary:
  • What do you know about the words evidencediscoverprotectand gigantic?
Math:
  • Can you tell me how much money is pictured?

Things to Know:

Somerset E-News: It has come to my attention that some of you are not receiving the Somerset E-News. For some reason, the E-News can default to the spam folder of an email address. This email is sent out every Friday afternoon and contains information about special events and things to know. You can find the latest E-News HERE. If you haven't been receiving it, check that spam folder! We are currently working on fixing this so it won't happen anymore.

Virtual Project Fair: For this year’s project fair, we want to learn about what projects or hobbies you have been keeping busy with during the pandemic. You can post a short video (no more than 2 minutes) on Seesaw using the classroom labeled Somerset Project Fair (grade level) i.e. Somerset Project Fair Kindergarten or Somerset Project Fair 1st grade.

Think of it as a “show and tell” that answers 3 main questions:

1) What did you do?

2) What did you learn?

3) Why is it interesting?

The goal is to keep it simple and fun! A couple of sample videos from a Somerset Star is included below.

All of the videos will be available for viewing and feedback through Seesaw Blog Links given on the day of the Virtual Project Fair on April 22 where we will also host an all school Google Meet! Stay tuned to the e-news for more details.

Skip-Counting: Last week, we were BUSY learning all about pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters! As we were counting nickels, I realized that our class could use a bit of a count by 5s refresher. We've been singing songs and dancing to skip counting all week. Want to support your child in skip-counting at home? Try some of these ideas!

Rollerblading Slip: On Friday, April 9th, students were sent home with a blue permission slip for roller skating (pictured below). Please return the slip at $5 fee as soon as you can and I will get them to Mrs. Westman. Your child will not be able to participate until the form is signed by a parent or guardian.  Thank you!

Library Checkout: The amazing Sarah Garrett has found a way for students to check out books from the library safely! Please return library books after each weekend so your child can check out a new one on Tuesdays!
