First Grade News (Sept. 16)

Peek at the Week:

We had another great week in first grade! It was our first full week using our academic curriculums. Here's an overview of the things we practiced:

Math: It was popsicle week! We used popsicle sticks to practice tally marks, made a class pictograph and tally chart about our favorite popsicle flavors, and counted by 2s using twin pops! We wrapped up the week by having a popsicle party where each child got to eat their own twin pop! We also spent a little time re-learning math apps on our iPads (Dreambox and Moose Math).

Literacy: We read the stories This is the Way We Go to School and How Will I Get to School This Year? and we created a class book with silly different ways to get to school. You will get your own copy of the class book next week!
       -phonics focus: short a
-sight words: the, of, and, a, to

Writing: We wrote our first story "What I Like." Next week, we will learn how to share our writing on Seesaw so you can see it from home! :)

Social Studies: We will be working on building our classroom community over the next few weeks. We also kicked off our new social studies curriculum, Studies Weekly. We learned that we are part of three communities with different responsibilities in each: home, school, and local communities.

Things to Know:

Take Home Folders
Your first grader will take home a folder every Friday. It will mostly have their work from the week, but also some reminders and sometimes things that may need to be signed and returned. Please take a look at this each weekend and send it back empty every Monday. Thank you!

First Grade Rules!
This week, we learned about why rules in school are important. Not only do they help keep our classroom a fun place to learn, but they are so important for our safety as well. Please review our 5 classroom rules with your child over the weekend:

Okay, okay...Before I post this last rule, it is important to know that your child's teachers are happiest when your child is kind, safe, and trying his/her best. This rule is a reminder to do those things (aaaaand maybe a little bit of an "umbrella" rule: If you are about to do something that could make your teacher sad or upset, you probably shouldn't be doing it anyway!) Thus, we have Rule #5:

I have been a happy, happy teacher this week! 💗

Classroom Schedule UPDATED:
Once we kicked off our academic schedule, first grade teachers realized we needed to make some changes in order to help the day run smoothly. Take a look at our updated schedule here:

Picture Day-
SMILE! Picture day is on Tuesday, September 26th. Our pictures are most likely in the morning to avoid the food spills and messy hair that can happen during lunch and recess. :-)

Breakfast Reminder-
If your child eats breakfast at school please try to get them here by 7:35/7:40. Our class heads right to specials at 8am so in order for kids to get breakfast, unload their backpack and have time to eat they need to be here a little earlier. If your child rides the bus they are here in plenty of time!
