Weekly Update: May 5, 2023

Peek at the Week:

Want to hear about our week? Ask your child the following questions:

MATH:
  • What is ten more and ten less than the following numbers? 100 more, and 100 less?
  • Can you count these quarters? (counting by 25)

READING:

  • What did you learn about tooth traditions from around the world?

  • Can you read this poem?

  • What do you remember about these vocabulary words?

SCIENCE:

  • What is an engineer?
  • What lego creations have you made in Science? (Check Seesaw!)
WRITING: We began a unit on poetry! Ask your child about the poems he/she has written so far. :-)

Things to Know:

ACTION ITEM:
Many of our headphones are starting to deteriorate. Before our FAST testing coming up, it would be helpful to ask your child whether or not their headphones are working. I have replaced what I can, but unfortunately am having a hard time keeping up at this point! (That being said, if you have any old headphones sitting around the house, we'd gladly take them!) Thank you!

LIFE CYCLES ALL AROUND:
We are so excited to continue our study of life cycles in real life! Last week, we read non-fiction texts about plants and seeds. OF COURSE we took that opportunity to plant some seeds of our own! We are anxiously awaiting on our green bean seeds to sprout. :-)

We are also counting down the days until our chicks and ducklings hatch! Each year, it is a tradition in first grade to study the life cycle of a chicken. We incubate chicken eggs in our classrooms and watch the magic happen. We have been so fortunate to have also gotten the opportunity to incubate duck eggs in the last few years, as well! We currently have 10 duck eggs incubating in our classroom for 28 days. The other first grade classrooms have 4 chicken eggs each, incubating for 21 days.

NUMBER SCROLLS:
Thank you so much for helping us gather the materials to start our number scroll project! We have one new member in the 1,000 Club: Brooks! Way to go, Brooks!

Our class is visiting the Book Fair on Monday, May 8.  Students will choose their FREE book during our class shopping trip. They will also be making a list of books they wish for.
