PARENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

Gingerbread Houses! The winter season is an exciting time for elementary students! While we keep as much of the time focused on learning as possible, we do have some fun traditions that we love to sprinkle in throughout the weeks.

It is a tradition at Somerset for First Grade students to make Gingerbread Houses with their 4th Grade Buddy Classrooms. We are scheduled to do this on Friday, December 16th with Ms. Tulia's Class.

We are in need of donations and volunteers for this project. Please click on THIS LINK if you would like to donate or volunteer!

Thanks so much!

Reading Volunteers: You're invited!

Who: Friends and Family of our Somerset Stars

What: We are looking for helpers that are willing to meet with students one-on-one on the following categories:
  • Sight word practice
  • CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant words, such at cat, hop, him)
  • Sentence fluency
Volunteers will be given an easy to follow binder with all materials and directions so they can hit the ground running with students! The expectation would be to meet with each child for approximately 5-10 minutes, for as long as you are able. It is a "come when you can, leave when you want" gig!

When: We are looking for volunteers Monday-Friday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. (You choose the dates that work for you and the length of time you can stay within the given time frame.) I just chose the most consistent window of time within our schedule, but if you are interested in a different time of day, just let me know and I would be happy to figure something out!

THINGS TO KNOW:

SHHHHH Secret: I will be starting a Kindness Countdown to winter break. Starting Monday, December 12th, each day we will pull 1 chain link off our countdown and do, make, create, or share something special! Feel free to ask your child each day what we do!

First Grade Winter Concert: At Somerset, concerts for grades 1-4 are on a biennial rotation: spring concerts one year, winter concerts the next.
This year is winter concerts for grades 1-4, no spring concerts.  Kindergarten has a spring concert only.

Grades 1 & 4   Day Concert for School
Thursday  •  December 15
1:00-2:00 p.m.

All classes are invited to attend.
Parents and grandparents who cannot attend the evening concert are welcome to attend this day concert.

Grade 1 • Evening Concert for Parents
Thursday  •  December 15
6:00-6:30 p.m.
First graders arrive in the gym by 5:45.

Children stay with their families until the signal is given.

Guided Reading Books and Packets:

Students will be taking home a new paper book roughly each week. It is so helpful to re-read these books at home, as they reinforce the skills taught in small group reading. These packets are meant as an optional way to further engage with the books and provide extra practice with sight words, comprehension, and sentence writing. If you are able, I encourage you to place the packet along with your child's growing collection of paper books and refer to it whenever you're looking for a little extra way to practice reading at home!

Library Books:
We have library time every Tuesday morning. Please help remind your child to return their books on Tuesday (or any day prior!) so they are ready to check-out books.

Snacks:
Please remember to send your child with a snack each day. We do have some extras for those rushed mornings. We are always happy to take donations for extra snacks if you are able. Thank you!

Somerset Directory: Check the Somerset E-News for our Somerset school directory! It is a great resource for when trying to plan playdates, birthday parties, and other events!
