Weekly Update: 2/11-2/15

KINDNESS DAY: Please see the following note from our Somerset E-News:

Kindness Day is coming up on Thursday, February 14! We are looking forward to benefiting several local organizations including: People Serving People, Meals on Wheels, The Humane Society, and DARTS!

In order for this event to be a success we need donations of items for the stations, as well as volunteers to help run stations the day of the event.

We are still looking for volunteers to help lead stations for this event. Please consider donating an hour of your time!

If you have already signed up, please try to have materials to Somerset on Monday, February 11 so we can begin set-up for Thursday.

Remember:
Celebrating student friendships, practicing empathy and building a stronger school community are all goals we can work toward with these activities which are also supported by our whole school Somerset STAR Behavior practices. Thank you for your continued support as we work toward these important goals.

We ask that you do not send any Valentine cards or candy to school with your child. We will accept any unaddressed valentines for donations to Neighbors, Inc., which serves families in northern Dakota County.

We are very excited about the opportunities for our students and trust that it will be a fun and meaningful day of celebrating our wonderful Somerset Star Students!

JUMP ROPE FOR 💓: Students will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart on Friday, February 15th. Please make sure that your child is wearing comfortable clothes/activewear for an afternoon of fun! If you wish to return your fundraising envelopes, I will be collecting them throughout this week.

SPELLING: Our next spelling test will be on Thursday, February 14th. Here are our spelling words for the week (Sight words will be very and friends):

NEW SCHEDULE: With the start of a new semester, our schedule has changed a little bit. We have finished our semester in Spanish class and will now have Media/Library time on MONDAYS. Please take note of the days in which your child should bring shoes for Physical Education:

MYSTERY READERS: We have had SO much fun with our Mystery Readers this year! There are still PLENTY of slots open, so spread the word! We love to have parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, cousins...all of our classroom family's special friends for a visit! Please click THIS LINK to sign up!

SELF TALK: With or without realizing it, all of us have a voice inside our minds that speaks to us whenever we make a mistake or struggle with something. We have spoken A LOT about "mindset" and how we can help foster a growth mindset in our children, but the REAL power lies in a child's inner voice, or self talk. A growing amount of research is showing that self-compassion is linked to not only better mental health, but higher levels of motivation and achievement! This week, we chose to be mindful of our self-talk, and are working on flipping the script of our inner voice when we make mistakes or encounter a challenge.

We have also been starting each morning with a positive affirmation during circle time. Each morning, a student chooses a number and we say that positive affirmation together. Then, we reference it throughout the day whenever we need a reminder! :-)

Be on the lookout for positive self-talk and don't forget to catch yourself if you happen to slip into negative self-talk. Children learn the most from our own modeling and actions!

100th DAY OF SCHOOL: With all of those crazy cold days, our 100th day of school will now be on Friday, February 22nd.
