Weekly Update: Week of May 7

Things to Know:

BOOK FAIR: Our Buy One/Get One FREE book fair is this week (May 7-12)! Our class will be visiting the fair on WEDNESDAY at 8 am. All students will receive a free book of their choosing, thanks to the BOGO sale and a generous community donation! Students are welcome to bring additional money to purchase a book if they wish. Please note that, for the free book, K/1/2-grade students can choose a book costing up to $5.

MAP TESTING: Our Measures of Academic Progress tests are taking place this week and next (Wednesdays at 9 am). Please encourage your child to get a good night’s rest and a well-balanced breakfast in the morning. It will help their bodies and brains get ready to be their best. They will also have a chance to eat their snack before the test begins as well. Another helpful note:Your child took this test in the beginning of the school year. Since that first test, “the computer” has been tailoring each question to challenge your child. When he/she gets a question correct, the child gets a question that is a little bit harder. When he/she gets one incorrect, the test adjusts itself accordingly. The test is designed to challenge your child as much as possible in order to see how far he or she can go. Each child’s test is different, and each child WILL come across questions that he or she may not know--and that is okay! Reassure your child that it is supposed to be that way, in order to avoid frustration and flustered feelings. I'm so proud of the growth that these first graders have made this year and can't wait to see them shine!

END OF THE YEAR PLAY: Play practice is in full swing! Please read through the play a few times with your child. Encourage your child to read his/her parts out loud in what we call a "loud presenting voice." We are having so much fun and can't wait to share our plays on the 24th!

HAVE YOU HEARD? There will be a special election on May 8! District 197 is holding a special election and I hope you will vote on or before May 8. If it passes, the students at Somerset will benefit in the following ways:
  • Building maintenance updates
  • A new gym, separated from the cafeteria
  • Updated classrooms & new learning spaces
  • Handicapped accessibility improvements
  • And more
Maintenance updates and facility renovations are being proposed for all of the district’s elementary and middle schools and the high school. Since your child is just in elementary school, they could also  benefit from upgrades made at Heritage or Friendly Hills Middle School and Henry Sibley High School.
More information can be found at www.isd197.org/bond or by calling 651-403-7557. Combined polling locations on May 8 will be at Friendly Hills, Heritage, Henry Sibley, Pilot Knob and St. Stephen’s Church (West St Paul). They will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Find your polling location at pollfinder.sos.state.mn.us or call the District Office at 651-403-7002.
