Weekly Update: 4/6/18

Things to Know:

FRIDAY FOLDERS: We are in need of some more Friday Folder stuffers! Please visit THIS LINK to sign up!

SPELLING: We will have our next spelling test on April 12th. Please remember to have your child sort and spell each night! Tests are every Thursday at 8:00 a.m. Thank you!

MYSTERY READERS: Thank you to all who have volunteered! We were all booked up, however I thought it would be fun to wrap up the year with some additional mystery reader slots! If you haven't had a chance yet, there are now some slots for Mondays leading up to the end of the school year. Please visit this link if you are interested!

DODGE: We will be visiting Dodge Nature Center to help kick-off our science unit, Animals 2 x 2, on Thursday, April 12th. If you are interested in chaperoning this trip, please let me know! We will be at Dodge in the afternoon (Buses depart from Somerset at 11:45 and return at 1:30 p.m.).

SNACK SHOP: By the end of the year, students need to be able to show various values of money up to one dollar using coins (P, N, D, Q). In order to provide students with hands on practice with this concept, we will be opening up a snack store in our class. If you wish to donate to this cause, please send a bag or box of individually wrapped peanut-free snacks to school with your child. Thank you so much for your help in making school a fun and memorable experience for your child!

YOUR VOTE COUNTS! In December, the District 197 School Board voted unanimously to place a funding question before voters on May 8, 2018. The decision was based on 18 months of study by the district that included a Facilities Task Force, community input and expert assessments of building and mechanical maintenance needs.

There will be one ballot question on May 8, a request for the approval to issue $117 million in building bonds for additions, renovations and repairs at all schools, K-12. The bond proceeds will be used to:
- Conduct building and mechanical maintenance
- Modernize outdated classrooms and educational spaces
- Improve fine arts and athletics spaces
- Address handicapped accessibility and school parking lot safety

If voters approve the ballot question, the tax impact to a resident with a home value of $237,000 (median district home value) would be approximately $7 per month.

Graph showing that 42 percent of the bond will be used for maintenance and 58 percent will be used for academic fine arts and athletic improvements

Graph showing that 40 percent of the bond projects will be done at the high school, 28 percent of projects will be at the middle schools and 32 percent of projects will be at the elementary schools
