Marvelous March!

Good afternoon!

This month, we have a lot to be excited about. Today we kicked off our Read Across America celebration by celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday at an all-school assembly. We also learned about some fun things that we will be doing this month to have fun while reading! This week, we will be doing something special each day to gear up for a month of fun:

Monday, March 2nd: "Hats off to Reading!" Day (We wore our hats all day) :-)

Tuesday, March 3rd: "Sock it to me with a Good Book" (aka crazy sock day)
Wednesday, March 4th: "Reading is no Sweat!" (aka sweatpants day)
Thursday, March 5th: "Score with a Good Book!" (aka sports gear day)
Friday, March 6th: "Slip into a Good Book!" (aka PJ/Slippers day)

During the week of March 9th, we will have SCHOOL-WIDE mystery readers and DEAR (drop everything and read) time!

We will also have a bookmark design contest and book character parade to wrap up the month. We will design bookmarks in class and the winners will be chosen on March 25th. Students are invited to dress as their favorite book character on Thursday, March 26th.

BUT WAIT! That's not all!

Students are encouraged to ramp up their reading this month by tracking their minutes to earn a special prize! Today, your child was sent home with a blue slip with Dr. Seuss hats on it. Each hat represents 20 minutes of reading. Once your child has shaded in all of the hats (100 minutes total), he/she can bring it in for a special prize drawing ticket. Students can earn up to 5 prize drawing tickets during the month.

This year, I decided to team up with our buddy classroom for a special incentive. IF EVERY STUDENT BRINGS IN AT LEAST 1 SLIP, WE WILL EARN A SPECIAL PARTY WITH OUR 3RD GRADE BUDDIES!

We will be keeping track of our progress on this chart pictured below:

Thank you for your support in making this a fun and memorable way to enjoy reading at both school and home!

In other news....

We began displaying our rock collection in science class! If you have not done so already, please have your child bring a rock to school to observe and share. It does not need to be fancy! Students love to look at the rocks and observe the various properties of each. Your child will be able to take the rock back home at the end of the unit.

That's all for now! Please let me know if you have any questions and have a great night!!!
:-) Mrs. B
