Weekly Update: 3/18-3/21

BOOK CHARACTER PARADE: On Thursday, Somerset students will be participating in a book character parade to celebrate the end of Read Across America month. There are SO many ways to make an impromptu book character costume- PLEASE do not feel the need to buy something new. Take a look at this link for some last-minute ideas!

Here are some other photos for inspiration!

FOOD DRIVE: The annual Somerset Food Drive is March 11-21 this year.

We are in week 2 of our annual food drive!  Our goal is to collect close to 1200 food items each year.  If every student and staff member donates 3 or more food items, we get very close to achieving our goal.

Third grade students collect the donated items about two times per week.  The students count the items, pack them in groups of 10 or 20 in paper grocery bags by the office & chart the total on the giant thermometer for everyone to see.

The food drive lasts two weeks and each day has a suggested item to donate, but all donations are welcome.

Week Two
  • MONDAY, March 18:  Canned Goods (vegetables, beans, fruits, chili, spaghetti)
  • TUESDAY, March 19:  Boxed or Bagged Goods (noodles, rice, crackers)
  • WEDNESDAY, March 20:  Soap and More (laundry, dish soap, bath soap, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, diapers)
  • THURSDAY, March 21:  Paper Products (paper plates, paper towels, toilet paper)

MATH MONDAYS WITH MR. DAVE: We have been SO fortunate to have our special math helper back from his winter trip to California! Mr. Dave has been a long-time volunteer at Somerset Elementary and, since he is beginning to work with many students in our class, we thought it'd be nice to feature him in our class blog! Mr. Dave has been working with small groups of students (for approximately 15 minutes per group) on math and logic challenges. Here is a little bit about Mr. Dave:

Hi. My name is Dave Kelm and I am a volunteer at Somerset Elementary School.  This year I am working with Ms Brignac's first grade students in mathematics.  After I retired I was looking for some volunteer activities where I thought that I could make an impact.  I had volunteered for over ten years in the St Paul School System while we were living in St Paul.  After moving to Mendota Heights one of the school board members suggested that I volunteer in Mendota Heights.  I enjoy working with small groups of students and am continually impressed with how quickly the students can absorb challenging material. I feel that I benefit as much as the students by the time we spend together!

Thanks for all you do, Mr. Dave!
