Weekly Update: 11/12-11/20

Things to Know:

SPELLING: Here are our spelling words for the week! Our test will be on Thursday, November 29. Two of the high-frequency words will be chosen as extra credit! (Hint: the words are could and old.) 😉

MYSTERY READERS: We have had SO much fun with our Mystery Readers this year! There are still PLENTY of slots open, so spread the word! We love to have parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, cousins...all of our classroom family's special friends for a visit! Please click THIS LINK to sign up!

WINTER WEATHER IS HERE! It is important to get out that winter gear so recess can be an enjoyable time for everyone!

RULES REFRESH: We always work hard to be Somerset STARS, however our class is having more success with these new, specific rules for school. As our previous rules were a little more abstract, these rules explicitly help us to keep our Somerset STAR behavior shining!

What keeps Mrs. Brignac happy in this "catch-all" rule?
Safety, positive attitudes, and hard work! :-)

HANDS TO YOURSELF! As our kids are developing social skills and navigating free-play, please reiterate the importance of safety and respect for others through keeping hands and feet to ourselves. Personal space is important, and our first graders are still learning a lot about boundaries. We read books, sang songs, and practiced keeping personal space at school last week. Please continue the conversation and check out the song and book below to help review with your child!

Tip: Play Kids has a BUNCH of great social skills songs compiled HERE. Check 'em out!

Pioneer Press Writing Submissions

Every year, the Pioneer Press hosts the following contest:

Attention, first-graders: Whether it’s your parents, your school or the mashed potatoes you’re planning to pile on your plate at Thanksgiving, the Pioneer Press wants to know about it.
Describe what you’re thankful for and why in 30 words or less, and we’ll choose some to share with our readers the Sunday before Thanksgiving. You are welcome to submit artwork to go along with your description. Include your name, age, school and where you live, and put your name on the back of your artwork.
Deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10. Because of the large number of submissions, no entries or artwork can be returned.

Take a look at our class submissions!
