First Grade News: May 12th, 2024

Peek at the Week:

Want to hear about our week? Ask your child the following questions:

MATH
  • What are the "rules" on these function machines?

READING:

  • Can you spot these Non-Fiction Text Features in a book from home?

  • What do you remember about these vocabulary words?

WRITING: We continued OPINION writing! Ask: What pet did you write about this week? Can you show me on Seesaw?

OTHER FUN THINGS:

1. Nurse Emily came for a healthy teeth presentation! We learned about how to care for our teeth and what can happen if we eat a lot of sugar while not caring for our teeth. She also gave each first grader a special bag full of tools to keep our teeth healthy. Thanks, Nurse Emily!

2. Our chicks hatched! In all of our first grade classes, we have a total of 19 chicks. Our classroom had a hatch rate of 100% with all seven of our eggs hatching. Meet our class chicks below (named by our Somerset Stars):

Things to Know:

SPRING FIELD TRIPS: In your child's backpack, you will find a permission form for two upcoming field trips:

Snapology Field Trip- First graders will be taking a field trip to Snapology in Minneapolis. This field trip is always a lot of fun! The teachers there will lead the students through an engineering project and they will have time for free play with all the interactive STEM toys. Our class is going May 21st from 11am-2pm. Students will eat lunch right before our departure time. The cost of the field trip is $12. Please let me know if you would like to chaperone.

Ivy Falls Park picnic-  Our last field trip is a walk to Ivy Falls park for a picnic. We will be doing this on Tuesday, June 4th. All first grade classes will be walking together leaving Somerset at 10am. Parents are welcome to join us! Students will need to bring a home lunch that day or order a bag lunch from the school.
Please return the forms from your child's backpack as soon as possible. Thank you!

A NOTE FROM MS. PETERSON:

April 30, 2024

Dear Somerset Families,
Your children are busy preparing music to share with you in our spring evening concerts. What
fun we are having! The joy of singing and dancing is in the air!

Due to finding that I have a treatable form of cancer, I recently cancelled extracurriculars like 4th
grade choir to make my new life manageable for the time being, yet planned to complete evening
spring concerts for Grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. I recently learned the district needs to convert the music
room into two classrooms for next year. Packing up the music room is a new project that is taking
after-school time.

After careful time management assessment, I need to cancel all Grades 1, 2, 3, and 4 evening
concerts. Kindergarten day concert will continue.

To share the children’s music with you in lieu of an evening concert, I will:
• video Grades 1-4 singing and dancing in the music room.
• post these videos to you.
• send you a printed program.

And of course, you can always ask your child for a special personal performance at home!
Kindergarten spring concert will continue as scheduled because it is during the day.

Kindergarten Spring Concert for Parents

  • Tuesday • June 4, 2024 • 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Kindergartners will give a spring concert for their parents during the school day.

My apologies for disrupting your plans of evening concerts with your children. I know many of you have
invited grandparents and family members, and have made arrangements to be present at the concerts.
After treatment, I look forward to returning to a robust concert schedule next year!
