Social Studies Update:

  • Our Scholastic News was “My Friend Earth” which focused on things the earth gives us. We also made an Earth Day craft on Wednesday! Finally, as part of the Somerset Social, every grade level was given a "class party."  First Grades' theme was "Sundaes and Story Time!"  We finished up our week by making ice cream sundaes and enjoying some great books!

Things To Know:

Minneapolis Institute of Art Field Trip:
Friday, May 1, 2026 - 9:20 - 11:40
This trip is an annual tradition at Somerset and is a culmination of the Art Adventure program your child participated in earlier in the year. A special thanks to Janelle Hart (Amos' mom) for being our Art Adventure teacher this year!

LIFE CYCLE LEARNING:
Through our reading curriculum, Being a Reader, first graders have been learning about life cycles in our non-fiction text unit. We have studied how various animals change from baby to adult, including house spiders, turtles, elephants, and butterflies. We also examined a non-fiction text about the life cycle of seeds.

Dating back to our previous Foss Science curriculum (that we no longer use), it has become a tradition in first grade to study the life cycle of a chicken - in real life! Even if our science curriculum has changed, we welcome the opportunity to tie our new literacy curriculum with hands-on learning and continue the tradition! Every year, we incubate chicken eggs in our classrooms and watch the magic happen. All first grade classrooms have 4 chicken eggs each, incubating for 21 days. They are set to hatch SOON!

MINNESOTA SPRING IS HERE!

Rain, snow, heat, cold…It’s hard to know what kind of weather to expect this time of year! Thank you for helping your child select the right gear for being outside at recess every day.  If it is wet outside, please send boots with your child as the playground gets very muddy. This helps keep our classroom carpet clean! Thank you!

DODGE:

We will be going on our last field trip to Dodge on Tuesday, April 28 from 8:45 - 10:30. We will be learning about “Sounds of Nature.” *Please make sure your child is dressed for outdoor hiking!

PROJECT FAIR:

Somerset Project Fair is coming soon! Thursday, April 30 - 6:00-7:30pm
