Writing: The students listened to and discussed the mentor text Growing Vegetable Soup. They brainstormed and wrote about a special activity they do with a family member. Students are working on correct letter formation, spacing between words and consistent use of capital letters and punctuation.
Social Studies Update:
- Our Studies Weekly Magazine focused on Maps and Globes. The students listened to and discussed the Scholastic News “Lost Penguin” which told of the rescue of an emperor penguin. Finally, our Amazeworks book for the week was Many Ways.
FUN STUFF:
On behalf of the Somerset PFG Read a Thon Committee and Raising Cane's, we wanted to send a huge congratulations to you and your incredible 1st grade students!
Your class achieved the highest average minutes read per student across the entire 1st grade! That is an amazing accomplishment and shows how much your students love reading.
As the top-performing class, your 1st graders have won the celebratory Chicken Finger & PJ Party, sponsored by Raising Cane's. *I have confirmed with Raising Canes they do not use any peanut or tree nut products in their food.
THIS PARTY WILL TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12!

Grade 1 & 4 Day Concert for School
Wednesday • December 10, 2025
1:00-1:30 p.m.
All classes are invited to attend.
Parents and grandparents who cannot attend the evening concert are welcome to attend this day concert.
Grade 1 • Evening Concert for Parents
Thursday • December 11, 2025
6:00-6:30 p.m.
First graders arrive in the gym by 5:45.
Children stay with their families until the signal is given.
Gingerbread Houses:
Making Gingerbread Houses is an annual tradition for 1st Graders at Somerset! We will be building Gingerbread Houses on Friday, December 19th from 1-2 p.m. We are looking for supply donations and would love to have you join us on this special day! You can sign up to volunteer or donate supplies using this link: Signup Genius Link. Please send in donations by Monday, December 15th. If you plan to attend, please arrive at 12:45 to assist with supply set-up. Thank you for your willingness to help out with this event. Your generosity is much appreciated!
Lice:
Unfortunately, there have been many cases of lice reported at Somerset recently. Please be diligent in checking your child’s hair and talking with them about the importance of not sharing hats, getting their head too close to others, etc. so we can prevent the spread. There is an information sheet in your child’s Take Home Folder.
