Weekly Update: May 30, 2025

Peek at the Week:

Want to hear about our week? Ask your child the following questions:

MATH
  • What numbers are missing on the number grid? How do you know?

READING:

  • The students listened to and discussed the story Julius and revisited poems they have read this year. They reflected on how they have grown as readers and talked about their favorite kinds of texts.  We also talked about a summer reading plan--reading at least 15 - 30 minutes (5x a week) and thinking about a great place to read!

  • What is one way you've grown as a reader this year?
  • What and where do you want to read this summer?

WRITING:
We started our First Grade Memory Books this week! What are some memories and favorite things from the year?

SOCIAL STUDIES UPDATE:

Our Studies Weekly magazine focused on “Workers Contributions”. We discussed how workers contribute to the economy (markets, manufacturing, transporting, marketing and working at home).  The Scholastic News was “Say Cheese for Summer Safety”  The students learned about summer safety tips.

Things to Know:

PACKING UP:

It’s hard to believe next week is our last week of school! Please make sure your child brings their backpack to school every day as we will be sending home stuff throughout the week. In addition, if you have any extra brown grocery bags, which we will use for taking stuff home, please send a couple with your child on Monday.

IVY HILLS TRIP- JUNE 3:

As of right now, the weather forecast is not looking great on Tuesday. If need be, we will postpone this trip and go on June 4th instead. We will make the decision on Monday and inform you as soon as we can.

Your child will have to bring a bag lunch from home unless you requested a school bag lunch. Also, send a water bottle for your child.

If you are chaperoning, please be in the Somerset Lobby by 10:25. We will start walking to the park at 10:30. In addition, bring your own bag lunch if you would like to eat with your child.  We should be back at Somerset by 12:15. If you no longer can attend, no worries! There are a lot of chaperones going.

A Message from Mrs. Espinoza, Art Teacher:

In our last art class of the year, we will be learning about Día de los Niños, Children' Day, celebrated in Latin America. We will be making mini-piñatas. We are looking for some families to donate fruit snacks or candy (like Jolly Ranchers, Dum-Dums, bubble gum). Please no nuts. Donations can be dropped off in the art room.

In addition, please have your child return their library books if they haven’t done so yet. Thank you!

Things to Know:

COUNTDOWN TO SUMMER:

As a fun way to celebrate our last days of school together, we are having a countdown to summer!  Each day we will have something special--whether that be a small treat (ex: bubble gum) or a PJ & Movie Day like today!  It’s hard to believe we only have 8 days of school left!

SNAPOLOGY:
Next Friday, May 30th is our field trip to Snapology.  If you are chaperoning, please be in the Somerset lobby by 11:20. The bus will leave at 11:30.  It will be a full bus as we have a lot of parent chaperones going with and we will be sharing the bus with Mrs. Nelson's Class.  If you would prefer to meet us at Snapology, just let me know.  The address is: 2649 Lyndale Ave S., Mpls.

LIFE CYCLE LEARNING:
We’ve continued to care for our chicks all week. They have grown a lot!  In addition, we had 3 ducks hatch (names: Sunshine, Lemon, and Midnight) and a bonus duck, Lucky, join the crew! (Mrs. Rall's family dog found a lost duckling in the yard and brought it home in a surprisingly gentle way. Definitely a Lucky Duck!) It’s been fun to watch new life enter the world and all the changes that happen in such a short time!
