Weekly Update: April 24, 2025

Peek at the Week:

Want to hear about our week? Ask your child the following questions:

MATH:

  • What time do these clocks show?

READING:

  • What did you learn about seeds and plants?

  • Can you read these AU/AW words? (Diphthongs)

  • What do you remember about these vocabulary words?

WRITING: What PET do you think is the BEST? (Opinion Writing)

SOCIAL STUDIES: The Scholastic News was chosen to correspond with our Earth Day discussions on April 22nd. We learned about sanitation workers and how they keep our planet cleaner by picking up our trash and taking it to landfills.

THINGS TO KNOW:

LIFE CYCLE LEARNING: Through our reading curriculum, Being a Reader, first graders have been learning about life cycles in our non-fiction text unit. We have studied how various animals change from baby to adult, including house spiders, turtles, elephants, and butterflies. We also examined a non-fiction text about the life cycle of seeds.

Dating back to our previous Foss Science curriculum (that we no longer use), it has become a tradition in first grade to study the life cycle of a chicken - in real life! Even if our science curriculum has changed, we welcome the opportunity to tie our new literacy curriculum with hands-on learning and continue the tradition! Every year, we incubate chicken eggs in our classrooms and watch the magic happen. We have been so fortunate to have also gotten the opportunity to incubate duck eggs in the last few years, as well! We currently have 6 duck eggs incubating in Mrs. Rall's 1st grade room for 28 days. The other first grade classrooms have 4 chicken eggs each, incubating for 21 days. They are set to hatch SOON!

READING:

  • What animal life cycle did you study this week? What did you learn about box turtles?

WRITING: The students worked on writing another opinion paragraph about something fun they do at school.  They worked on starting with an opening sentence, adding 3 reasons for their opinion and ending with a conclusion or closing sentence. In addition, we continue to practice consistent use of capital letters and punctuation.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Our Studies Weekly magazine focused on “Wants and Needs.” The students learned about the differences between wants and needs and ways people meet their needs. The Scholastic News was “Smiley Sneakers.” Students learned about Justice Swann, a boy who helped design a sneaker worn by a basketball star. After learning about Justice, they planned and designed their own sneaker!
